PostHeaderIcon Windows Phone 7 Bootcamp (9/15)

My friend Jeff Blankenburg has announced that they're bringing a Windows Phone 7 Bootcamp event to Cleveland!

There will be a full day of Windows Phone 7 development training.

Taken from the event description:

Join us for a day of Windows Phone 7 hands-on training. You’ll learn how to build Silverlight-based applications that take advantage of the many Windows Phone 7 platform features.

We’ll introduce all the basic concepts required to get started building Silverlight applications including the Windows Phone 7 platform and frameworks as well as the designer and developer tools. We’ll also cover the process for submitting your application or game to the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. Bring your laptop! Topics covered will be reinforced with an opportunity to explore hands-on-labs using your own laptop. Windows Phone 7 experts will be on hand to help you explore Windows Phone 7 development.

PRE-REQUISITE:  Bring your ideas and design specs and prepare to build. You’ll also need a computer installed with the Windows Phone Developer Tools available here. The required tools for installation are located here. Seating is limited, due to the hands-on nature of this afternoon lab and the opportunity for one-on-one instruction from Windows Phone 7 experts.  Register today.

Unfortunately, our Microsoft office here is small, so space is limited.  If you want in, sign up today!

You can see the full tour schedule here.

PostHeaderIcon Shoutout to the Community’s Sponsors

As much as I like promoting the user groups and events here, I want to thank those who help make it possible for our groups to sustain and our events to happen.  Thank you to all of the sponsors behind the user groups, as the location, food, speaker fees, and other costs with running a user group are covered from your support.

Shoutouts go to:

LeanDog, Inc.

From Ignite Cleveland to Startup Weekend to hosting other groups to the GiveCamp to an upcoming TechMash event – this company has been planning, sponsoring, or hosting many events and groups within the past couple months.  Jon Stahl and his team have been a welcome addition to the technical arena, and I look forward to collaborating with these guys on other events here.

Bennett Adelson

This company helps organize many groups here including the Cleveland System Center Special Interest Group, the Ohio North SQL SIG, and the .NET SIG.

 Sogeti

This company has sponsored the food and venue for the Cleveland C#/VB.NET SIG.  Every month, there’s always at least one Sogeti person on hand to make sure everything is running smoothly at the venue.  You may also see them as sponsors for some of the other events in the area.

 Microsoft

This company has permitted many user groups – including the Ohio North SQL Server SIG, the Bennett Adelson.NET SIG, and Cleveland SharePoint Users Group – to use their facilities.  They also support, host, and/or sponsor many events here – including the Cleveland Silverlight Firestarter, the MSDN events, the ArcReady events, the TechNet events, and the Cleveland Day of .NET.

Keep in mind that sponsorship and community support are not the sole things that these companies focus on.  These are also businesses that appreciate the work that we send their way.  If they didn’t have work coming in, they wouldn’t be able to provide the support and sponsorships for the community.  So please check out their sites and remember that these are just a few of the many sponsors who have helped our community.

If you run a group here and want us to give a shoutout to your sponsors, drop us a line at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

PostHeaderIcon State of the Site - 7 Months Update

On October 22, 2008, I launched Cleveland Tech Events, in hopes of having one spot to find all of the technical user groups in Cleveland. I knew that the technical community was spread out quite a bit, but I didn't realize just how large it is. By being so spread out, it really was hard to see what Cleveland had going for it in the technical community. I really wanted to believe that there was hope here despite the politicians and economy, and launching this site has definitely given me a wonderful view of Cleveland's technical community and just how much potential is there.

In the past 7 months, I've met more influential people in our technical community and have started to meet these groups in person. Unfortunately, I am only one person, so it will take me awhile to meet all of the groups in person. As of today, we have 29 links under Resources - that's 29 groups so far. As more meetups are added and as I hear from others about more groups, I continue to update that list.

I put a Google calendar in place to make it a little easier to see how busy our technical community is here. Tomorrow, May 20th, we have 5 groups meeting at the same time. From architecture to social media to MySQL (database) to webloggers to NEOUPA - the topics for tomorrow's meetings are all across technology. Earlier this week, there was the Ruby meetup and tonight was the game developers meetup. Next week, we have meetings scheduled throughout the week. I don't think I've seen a week without a user group meeting of some sort.

I still have plenty of dreams for this site, but it'll take time to get there. I want to integrate the news postings and the Google calendar, to eliminate the double entry. I'd like to work with a more friendly layout - the Joomla layout only works for so much.

Another idea includes setting up a mailing list for group leaders and other community influencers to collaborate on events. I've had someone contact me directly on Twitter to get some groups together for possibly an upcoming event this summer. I've also had various leaders ask about the other leaders that I've been in touch with. Rather than have me as the middle man, how about having the ability to email directly? Is there an interest for this?

As I look at the site statistics, I am absolutely impressed with how well this site has been received, and I look forward to continuing this service for the community. Thanks to those of you who have contacted me and have gotten involved. I look forward to working with all of you going forward.

If you have any feedback on the site, suggestions, comments in general, or perhaps an event idea but not sure how to execute it... drop me an email at admin AT clevelandtechevents DOT com, and I will do what I can to help.

PostHeaderIcon Site Updates

Over the past few days, we've gotten a few questions, so we wanted to address them here:

Why do events appear on the site and not on the Google Calendar?  Why do events show up appear on the Google Calendar and not on the site?

Unfortunately, the two systems are not tied together yet.  However, we are working on a redesign that should be able to tie the two together.  For now, if you need access to post your events to the calendar or want me to post your event there, please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

I want to add the Cleveland Tech Events calendar to my Google Calendar.  What's the email address associated with the Cleveland Tech Events calendar?

The email address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it   Once we get your request, we will typically accept it.

Sometimes, there's an event that's away from Cleveland that's listed. Why is that?

Here at Cleveland Tech Events, we want to promote the technical community - as a whole and its members individually.  There are many talented technical speakers in our area that speak at conferences outside of the Cleveland area.  Sometimes, we may get a request to post that event and support the Cleveland speakers.  If you have an event like this, please let us know.

I am following you on Twitter, but you aren't following me back.  Why not?

We try to follow most people back, as we like supporting Cleveland as best as possible.  If we aren't following you back, send us an @clevtechevents reply and let us know!
