Introducing the NodeSchool Cleveland Meetup
Aug 19th, 2015 by Cleveland Tech Events Administrator

I’ve added another Meetup ICS feed to our events calendar.  Introducing NodeSchool Cleveland…

Come to these workshops to learn Node.JS and work through challenges with a group. Node.js is a JavaScript runtime for server applications. Node.js provides an event-driven architecture and a non-blocking I/O API that optimizes an application’s throughput and scalability. NodeSchool is an interactive workshop run through the command line and a text editor on your laptop. Come learn with us!

Akron Software Developers Guild Reboot
Aug 7th, 2014 by Sarah Dutkiewicz

From our friend Jerry D’Antonio….

As the summer winds to a close it’s time to ramp up the Guild’s activities again. It’s also a good time to perform an agile retrospective, talk about what’s worked well, reflect on where we have new opportunities, and reboot the group.

We’d love to form a small group of dedicated meetup organizers to actively manage the group. Anyone interested in being a co-organizer is welcome.

If you are interested in being involved but can’t attend the meeting please feel free to reach out to me over Twitter. You can find me at @jerrydantonio.

Introducing… Akron Programming Languages Meetup
Jun 18th, 2013 by Cleveland Tech Events Administrator

Our friend G in Akron has started a programming languages meetup.  More details:

Calling all programmers!

Programming languages don’t get enough <3.

In this group attendees can expect to join a forum where any and all features of a language are open for discussion, with the end goal of improving the groups knowledge as a whole.

At last count, there are hundreds of programming languages on wikipedia:…

This group aims to cover most of them (eventually), thereby providing a way for sharing knowledge of their existence.

Some languages need legacy hardware. All attempts will be made to provide resources to attendees to witness these languages on any legacy hardware they might require.

We meet alternate Thursday’s of the month at SYN/HAK: The Akron Hackerspace (21 W North Street, Akron, Ohio 44302) at 6pm beginning June 20, 2013. The meetups will be 1-2 hours, depending on how much time attendees have.

Their meetup is at:

While I’ve been joining various Meetup groups with the official Cleveland Tech Events account to get their meetings on the calendar, I figured I should mention a few of the new groups.  Hope you find them interesting!  Here are their names – with links to the individual meetups – and basic summaries.

Internet of Things Cleveland Meetup

Hey Cleveland! Ready for a tech revolution? Soon the new “Internet of Things” industry will change our lives by allowing us to connect, control and monitor “things”  with our smartphones. These smart devices will rely on an internet connection to stay in constant contact with us no matter where we are in the world. Imagine preheating your oven before you leave work, or opening a garage door remotely to let your son into the house, or even having your alarm clark start your morning shower. Sound like the Jetsons? It’s not! The technology exists today and product manufacturers are beginning to take notice and integrate it into their product lines. So let’s chat about it! All Northeast Ohioans are welcome regardless of your background.

We’ll be offering presentations and guest speakers covering a wide range of topics that touch upon all ends of the spectrum.  What to expect? Some technical talks, some philosophical discussions, and even demos are sure to be part of what you’ll experience.

WiTty Perspectives – Women in Tech in Cleveland, OH

Are you a woman in tech? Or perhaps you’ve mentored and helped women in tech
navigate the industry? Whatever your role may be, this group is to help address
issues common to women in tech and provide constructive criticism, feedback,
share stories, and do what we can to promote the tech industry to get more women
involved. Whether we want online forums or to share our stories in person, we
can do both here with the help of Meetup!

On Sponsoring a User Group Meeting or an Event
Mar 11th, 2012 by Cleveland Tech Events Administrator

After recently moving Cleveland Tech Events under the Cleveland Tech Consulting umbrella, I finally have a financial outlet to manage this site.  While most of my work as an independent consultant helps with my cost of living, some of my profits are getting back into the company, and it’s now time for me to step up Cleveland Tech Events a bit more.

My Experience on Sponsoring a User Group

I had a perfect opportunity to sponsor the Ohio North SQL Server User Group for their March 2012 meeting.  The topics of the meeting presentations were relevant to a topic I enjoy working with (PowerShell), and the group was a group that I had been involved with for awhile.  When I found out just how much it would cost for the pizza and pop (as that’s what their financial part covers), I was thrilled to help them out.  I’ve had friends wonder – why would you, as an independent consultant, want to sponsor a user group?  For me, it’s about giving back to the community and supporting it as best as I can.  It’s an avenue to get the word out about my skills and company.  And most of all, it’s a great opportunity for me to get the word out about this site!  Up until this year, I’ve run this site on nothing but word of mouth support.

Want to Sponsor a User Group Meeting or Event?

Being a sponsor of a user group meeting or event, you’re supporting the community and also getting the word out about your company.  It helps user groups feed their attendees, cover travel for paid speakers, pay for venue charges if needed, and defray some of the other expenses associated with running a user group or event.  For you as a sponsor, you may get your logo on the group’s website with a link to your company’s site, driving traffic to the website and bringing more company awareness into the community.  You may even get some time to talk about your group and/or your goals.  So it’s a win-win situation for both sides!

If you want to sponsor a user group or event, it may help to get in contact with the organizers, if sponsorship information isn’t clearly posted on their website.  If you run into a user group where you think you’d benefit from sponsoring the group (and the attendees would benefit from your sponsorship) and you can’t find the organizers’ information, reach out to me at admin at this domain and I’ll help you reach out to the user group or event organizers.  I have had people contact me in the past looking to sponsor a user group, and I have matched them to the appropriate groups.  So if you’re not sure which groups would be relevant, you can reach out to me and I can help you figure that out as well.

Want Me to Sponsor Your Group or Event?

I am definitely interested in sponsoring a few more meetings this year if it’s affordable.  Topics that I’m interested in include user experience, social networking, web development, PowerShell, mobile development, and cross-platform development.  Send me (admin at this domain) the information for your group’s meetings, and I’ll read through all submissions.  If it’s something I can afford, I’ll do what I can to help.  With the change in event submission guidelines, I am hoping to see something from that effort to put funds back into the community.
